Dan's skills at the negotiating table have resulted in many multi-million-dollar settlements for his clients. Yet he knows when a case demands more and is confident going to trial. In fact, the courtroom is where Dan feels most at home. "I believe my finest work is accomplished fighting for my client's rights in court," Dan says. "If we have to go to court, I will do my absolute best to win my client's case." And he did in 1999, when Dan and colleague Vern Harkins won a $15.4-million verdict for a high-school swimmer who suffered permanent spinal injuries during a team workout. "I really care about the people I represent," says Dan. "If someone has been wronged, I want to make it right." Dan is frequently asked to address colleagues on a wide range of issues. He has been a mediation advocate for much longer than alternative dispute resolutions have been popular speaking at seminars on the subject and on topics such as trial tactics and effective cross-examination. A native of Tacoma, Dan was an All-American swimmer at Wilson High School and the University of Washington, where he received his law degree in 1977. Dan became a partner with Rush, Hannula, Harkins & Kyler in 1980. He is married to Margaret and the couple has a daughter, Holly, and two sons, Adam and Ben. Dan has been listed for ten consecutive years in the prestigious, peer-recommended publication, The Best Lawyers in America. He has served as president and secretary/treasurer of the Tacoma/Pierce County Bar Association and elected representative of the Sixth Congressional District to the Washington State Bar Association Board of Governors. Dan has been a member of the Judicial Conduct Commission and the Governing Board of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association.
